Tough times

We have had a busy couple of weeks here with several sold boats moving around the country to new owners and lots of boats coming on the market that need viewing. Yacht for Sale Last week saw Eda Frandsen, the 53′ Danish gaff cutter move from the wilds of West Scotland to her new base in Cornwall. Jamie and Penny, who have run the very successful charter business Eda Frandsen Sailing for over 16 years now, have hung up their oil skins and are moving on to different activities. The boat has been bought by experienced charter skipper James Mackenzie and his girlfriend Becky who will carry on taking guests sailing on the west coast of Scotland and South West England. It was not ideal weather for their first voyage as new owners, being forced to put up the trisail after a day at sea! James was almost shocked at how well she dealt with the weather and could hardly believe that after a real hammering there was not one drop of water in the bilge! Perfect boat or project boat

There is a lot of interest in rebuilding wooden yachts, especially in these tough times when lumps sums of capital to buy is in short supply but significant payments can be made out of income thus spreading the cost. Yacht for Sale We are also seeing once again a desire to buy cheap and refit rather than buy sound and complete in the first place. 35 years ago when I started Yachts Markt plastic was all the rage and wood dropped off the radar as being simply old fashioned and out of date. The incredibly quick change from wood to plastic over just 3 or 4 seasons must be taken in conjunction with other socio-economic changes at the time. One of the more pleasant aspects of our work is when we discover a boat which really works, a boat which looks different from the usual, a boat with real character. Yacht for Sale Tara is one such – see Sailing Yachts on our web site – and her history opens a window on yachting across the Atlantic. The following account sent to us by her owner makes interesting reading. It’s not often that in spotting the details of a yacht for sale on the south coast of England, an ‘unknown’ designer’s name is seen attached to such a handsome boat. ‘Wink’ Warner? Buying at different ends of the scale.

Here at Yachts Markt we like to have a wide range of boats on our books, boats from all parts of the scale in price, size, condition and age. It is this variation that makes our business not only attractive for buyers but also for us here in the office. Yacht for Sale There are two such boats we have for sale that represent very different ends of the scale entirely, but both are attractive propositions in their own right, and although neither are suited to everyone, both will find passionate and excited new owners. Summer Sailing

This weekend, 6/7th July, saw the start of the Dartmouth Classic Channel Regatta, with two days of racing outside the harbour. We were there aboard our 43′ Camper and Nicholson ‘Zircon’, fresh from a 2 week refit and looking very smart. We had high hopes that the quality of th boat would make up for our lack of sharp racing skills, however it was not to be! Saturday brought very light winds which made the beat to the windward mark long and tiresome in the strong tide. Boats for Sale and Yacht for Sale It was clear not long after the start that the course would be shortened from the original 4 laps, and as it was very few boats even managed to complete 2 before the end of the afternoon. Our maximum boat speed during the race was a heady 3.1 knots which was greeted with utter delight and a celebratory beer. Regattas and Sun

It has been a busy summer for us here, with the weather playing a large part I am sure. Our purchase of a new boat last winter rather put the pressure on to get her ready for the summer season and take part in some of the fantastic Classic yacht regattas we have on the south coast. Several weeks of stripping and varninshing in the early opart of the season and 2 weeks of hard work in the yard saw our C&N Zircon looking very smart and ready to go racing. Without doubt she’s a classic

In the last 6 months we have had several owners approach us with boats they wish to sell that are a little out of our comfort zone and do not quite fit our normal remit. The issue for us with these few boats is that they are fibreglass, and being solely brokers of wooden yachts for over 35 years means that taking on a fibreglass yacht is a big step. Boats for Sale When Peter first started Yachts Markt, many of the yachts we were selling were relatively new, but the era of fibreglass had arrived and everybody wanted a yacht in the new material. Fibreglass was expensive but the wooden yachts had dropped in price, and if you sailed into a marina at that time in a 1960’s wooden yacht, people would look and say “poor chap, he can’t afford a modern boat”. Scandinavian Sailing

For the last few weeks I have been skippering the top gallant schooner Activ in the southern Baltic, and as always over here, have been treated to a delightful fleet of traditional boats in both Germany and Denmark. They do not have so many yachts as we have in UK, but they have a bigger fleet of traditional boats in the form of rebuilt and converted fishing boats and cargo boats. Boats for Sale The Danes produced many thousands of fishing boats, usually built of oak on oak, and mostly with their signature elliptical counter stern that is so exquisitely beautiful. As in UK, many of these boats were broken up on the beaches when the EU changed the fishing rules, but many survived and are sailing today as either charter boats or private yachts.
